The name Beni Ouarain originates from the Beni Ouarain tribe in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, known for the good quality of sheep. The Beni Ouarain tribe uses “live wool”, which is wool that is shorn from a living sheep, which makes the wool so qualitative. The Amazigh used to weave these rugs for very practical reasons as the winters could get tough.
The most well-known Beni Ouarain rugs are the ivory and black diamond shaped rugs, but there are many beautiful variations. Amazigh women weave Berber symbols into the rugs that tells a lot about their lives, history, culture, traditions and beliefs. A Beni Ouarain rug can tell a life story!
